Castle Stuart Golf Links

Grant Sword Joins Castle Stuart Golf LLP

Mark Parsinen, Managing Partner of Castle Stuart Golf LLP, has announced the addition of Grant Sword, former Managing Director of Morton Hotels, to Castle Stuart’s partnership. Parsinen said that Grant Sword, whose family hotel company owned and operated four hotels (The Golf View and Newton in Nairn, the Royal Golf Hotel in Dornoch, and Westerwood in Glasgow), will be involved in all aspects of Castle Stuart’s business with a particular focus on the hotel, spa, and resort-ownership elements, all of which are in their early phases of development planning.
Castle Stuart Golf has completed a recent limited ‘preview golf’ programme. The programme has introduced the links course (scheduled to open next July) to local Highland golf clubs, golf tour operators, golf journalists, course managers, and friends of the project.
November marks a return to a singular focus of preparing for next July’s opening. Grant Sword will be involved in that preparation as well as the planning for future hotel, spa and resort-ownership development.
"Grant Sword is well known and highly regarded in the golf and hotel sector of Scottish tourism," said Parsinen. "I have known Grant for six years and am privileged to have him join me in the management of Castle Stuart. We are excited about our future but intend to take it one step at a time. Grant will help us make these steps sure and steady."
Parsinen emphasised that Sword and he are committed to working closely with all Highland golf-related businesses to help make the region an increasingly attractive destination in the world of international golf tourism. "The Highlands are already one of the most sought out destinations in Scotland," Parsinen said. "And we’d like to be an additional asset for the region."

Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club

Established in 1887, Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club is situated just on the outskirts of Troon on Ayrshires world famous golfing coastline.
The course will once again be used as an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue when the Open returns to Turnberry in 2009 and has a reputation for some of the best maintained greens in Scotland.
Following considerable investment over the past few years the club now has twenty seven holes with which to test the golfer and also much improved facilities in the clubhouse and professional's shop.
The additional nine holes are part of the championship course and have added a different dimension to Barassie with a Par of 72 and a Standard Scratch of 74. The course measures just under 7000 yards and the new holes provide some wonderful challenges perhaps no more so than the par 3 fourth hole or the quirky dog leg par 5 eighth.
Kilmarnock Barassie is a challenging, but typically Scottish Links course with large undulating greens, deep bunkers and doglegs.
The quality of the course and the facilities offered have been rewarded in recent years by playing host to the British Amateur Championships in June 2001 along with Prestwick Golf Club and hosting the European Youths Championships the previous year.
The Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2004 saw Kilmarnock Barassie play host to the Junior Open Championship.
For more information on this great links course please visit the Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club web site.

Fairmont St Andrews re-names re-vamped Devlin as Kittocks Course

NEW KITTOCKS COURSE NAME AT FAIRMONT ST ANDREWS

It has just been announced today that from October 1st 2008 the former Devlin course at Fairmont St Andrews, will be re-named as Kittocks.
Fairmont St Andrews is a 5 star cliff top hotel, with two championship golf courses that enjoys panoramic views over the golden beaches and medieval sky line of St Andrews, the Home of Golf.
Speaking today, Gary Slatter, Director of Golf for Fairmont St Andrews said,
‘We are very excited about the re-naming of our former Devlin course to Kittocks. The new name change reflects not only the millions of pounds worth of changes being made to both the Kittocks course and the Torrance, our Open qualifying course for 2010 Open championship but also reflects an essential strand of Fairmont properties worldwide, that they all have an authentically local feel. The recent decision to also invest in improvements to Kittocks, will create one of the best golfing resorts in the world.’
Kittocks name is taken from the SSSI area of land on the course that is inhabited by a family of deer.
This protected area comes into view on several holes and provides abundant wildlife to be seen during a round on Kittocks, including pheasants, rabbits and hares, deer, grouse and badgers. The coastal land the course is built on reminded the legendary golfer Gene Sarazen of Pebble Beach when he first visited the site, as one of the course’s original architects.
The Kittocks course will also feature heavily in a new production of the new JJB Slazenger golf advert with Tony Jacklin, Andrew Murray and Gary Wolstenholme. The 30 minute show will be broadcast on Sky Sports Extra and Setanta Golf.
Talking today about the new design features on the Kittocks course, Slatter said. ‘We have worked with architect Gary Stephenson to improve both layouts and to accentuate the strengths of both courses.
Kittocks will have two holes from the original Torrance layout. With the re-positioning of several tees and three new greens, plus the addition of state of the art drainage systems both courses will be even better than before and worthy of their accolades including being named 18th best Golf Resort in the World by Conde Naste Traveler.’
The re-design of the two courses is part of an overall £13 million upgrade for the hotel including refurbished rooms, a new sports bar with large lcd televisions and pool table plus a sensational signature Spa, featuring Kerstin Florian products that are usually only found in Oscar night goody bags!
With all the improvements on both Fairmont St Andrews courses, it is expected that with events such as the Torrance Cup with Sam Torrance next week, that the fine reputation of both Kittocks and the Torrance courses will grow and grow.

Fairmont St Andrews Torrance Course

The Torrance Course at the Fairmont St Andrews is at present, undergoing extensive remedial works which are due to be completed in the Spring of 2009.

The 18 hole, 7039 yard course opened in 2001 and has since been named as a regional Open Qualifying course for 2010, hosted the Valiano Trophy, Wateraid Pro Am and 2 European Tour Events.

The remedial works are to include rebuilding each of the tees, additional drainage throughout the course, two sprinkler heads by each of the greens, a new irrigation system and increased capacity of the jolding basins to aid with better water control. Some of the tees will also be relocated to offer better playability, and bunkers will be redesigned.

While the work is taking place on the Torrance, the second course at the Fairmont, the Devlin will be operating as normal. A 7,400 yard cliff top course, the Devlin opened in 2002 and offers a challenging game with stunning cliff top tees and greens framed by the skyline of St Andrews.
